The Adamson University (AdU) Lady Falcons gave the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses all they had in a narrow five-set defeat, 18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-27, 15-8, in the second round of the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum yesterday.

Adamson was on its way to win the match, closing in at match point after Shaina Nitura’s running attack, 25-24. However, UST’s Regina Jurado had other plans as she scored three-straight points to steal the set and force a decider.

The Golden Tigresses seized the momentum and had a blazing 4-0 start, while the Lady Falcons could not regain their composure and eventually lost the match.

Adamson had the chance to end their losing streak in the fourth set after a dismal opening frame.

Nitura had another herculean effort with 36 points and 11 excellent digs, while Frances Mordi added 21 points and 19 excellent receptions.

On the flip side, Angeline Poyos erupted for 25 points and 15 excellent receptions, while Jurado chipped in 20 and 18 excellent digs.

In the battle of the setters, AdU’s Fhei Sagaysay fanned out 22 excellent sets against Cassie Carballo’s 25 for UST.

Adamson will try to improve from a 3-7 win-loss record when they take on the defending champions National University Lady Bulldogs on April 6, Sunday still at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
